Providing content in our official languages

The Official Languages Act, the Official Languages (Communications with and Services to the Public) Regulations and Treasury Board policy requirements establish when Fisheries and Oceans Canada uses both English and French to provide services to or communicate with members of the public. When there is no obligation to provide these in both official languages, content may be available in one official language only. Information provided by entities not subject to the Official Languages Act is in the language(s) provided. Your privacy

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for the administration of this website and related datasets. DFO is committed to respecting the privacy of all visitors to the Canadian National Oceanographic Data Centre (CNODC)'s website and related data access tools. All personal information collected by DFO is managed in accordance with the Privacy Act.

DFO collects the following information about each visitor:

IP address of the device used to contact the CNODC website
type of browser used
type of operating system used
the date and time of the visit
pages visited and datasets downloaded
referring webpage that linked to the CNODC website

This information is collected using the web server log files. Digital markers (or "cookies") are not used to gather this information. The information is stored with Microsoft Azure on a Canadian server.

DFO and the CNODC use this information to ensure the continued security and operations of this website, and to understand usage patterns to better support the delivery of open data. Specifically, DFO may use this data to:

Monitor server performance and dataset usage
Produce aggregate statistics on dataset usage without identifying information
Respond to security incidents by providing the information to the appropriate authorities
Identify and block users who violate these terms and conditions.

Usage of CNODC datasets

Datasets provided through this site are licensed under the Open Government License unless otherwise noted. This means you may copy, modify, publish, translate, adapt, distribute or other use the data in any medium, mode or format for any lawful purpose as long as you provide proper attribution.

Inappropriate usage of this site may result in your access being removed. To avoid this, users should only download one dataset at a time and refrain from repeatedly accessing the same dataset (i.e. "scraping").

For large volume requests (over 1 GiB) or repeated scripted access, please contact MEDS directly to make the appropriate arrangements:
